Cleaning up your flower garden, is a good task for this month, plant bulbs, shrubs, trees and vines Add some color to your garden by planting wild flowers seeds. Difficult-to-water narrow strips of lawn can be replaced with un-thirsty California Native plants. Begin setting clocks for decreasing watering needs of plants and reduce irrigation in shady areas. You will still have many tasks to accomplish before the first signs of frost. Here are a few gardening tasks and projects that you can do this month to help keep your garden looking it’s best for the rest of this season. Mulching fall planted perennials will keep the soil warmer longer, allowing root growth to continue, however, the plants do need time to harden off for winter. Spread a thick layer of mulch once the ground shows frost. Keep lawn and garden racked clean of leaves, old plants and grass clippings should be added to the compost pile. Lastly, one last application of slug bait will help eliminate them from reproducing again this fall.
